We Said Ask One Question Before Connecting Your Data. Anthropic Has Answered Most of It.
TL;DR: On 8 October Anthropic launched Claude Dashboards — ask a question in plain English, get a live dashboard that updates as your data does. On 27 September we told you to ask one question before connecting anything to a tool like this: who can see this data once it’s in there? Anthropic’s documentation answers most of it, and the answers are better than we expected. One gap remains, and it’s the one that matters if you connect a real warehouse.
What launched
Anthropic announced Dashboards and Motion on 8 October. Claude Dashboards turn plain-language questions into dashboards that stay current as the underlying data changes.
It connects to Amazon Redshift, BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks and Snowflake, and to CRM tools such as Salesforce through connectors you’ve already set up. Finished dashboards can be handed off to Amplitude, Grafana, Hex, Mixpanel, Omni, Perplexity, PostHog or Sigma; Looker, monday.com and Tableau are listed as coming soon.
Claude Dashboards are in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and they count towards your normal plan usage.
Separately, and effective today, 15 October, Claude Docs, Slides and Design are out of beta on every plan including Free, and switch on by default for Enterprise organisations. Claude Design also moves inside the main app — the standalone site at claude.ai/design closes on 14 December, and chats, project comments and public links there won’t survive it.
The question we told you to ask
On 27 September, when Replit bought Atta and shipped analytics into its chat, we said the capability was genuinely useful and that before connecting anything you should ask one thing: who can see this data once it’s in there? We noted nobody had published the answer, and predicted every builder in the category would ship something similar within months.
It took eleven days. So here is the same question, put to Claude Dashboards — and unlike last time, there is documentation to answer it.
What Anthropic documents about Claude Dashboards
Dashboards start private. Anthropic’s support page is explicit: “Dashboards start private to you.” Nothing is shared until you open one and choose to share it.
Who you can share with depends on your plan. On Pro and Max, the options are “Only you” or “Anyone with the link”, plus inviting specific people by email. On Team and Enterprise: “Only people invited”, “Anyone at your organisation”, or “Anyone with the link” — and that last one only appears if an owner has turned on external sharing or allowed that specific artifact.
There is no anonymous viewing. “Everyone needs a Claude account.” A link alone doesn’t open your data to the world.
And this is the good one. A shared artifact that pulls from connected apps “uses the viewer’s connections, not yours” — and if a viewer can’t reach a data source, “that part of the artifact shows an error instead of your data.”
Read that again, because it’s the opposite of the thing people fear. Sharing a dashboard doesn’t hand over your access. The person opening it sees what they are already allowed to see, and a blank where they aren’t.
Enterprise admins hold the switch. Dashboards are off by default on Enterprise, enabled under Organization settings → Artifacts, and can be limited to specific groups with custom roles.
The one Claude dashboards gap that still matters
Here’s where honesty is required. That viewer-connections rule is documented for artifacts in general, not specifically for warehouse-backed Claude Dashboards. Anthropic’s Dashboards page doesn’t restate it, and I could find no document that spells out whose warehouse credentials run a shared dashboard’s queries.
For a Salesforce connector you’ve already authorised, the general rule plainly applies. For a dashboard sitting on top of Snowflake or BigQuery, it is a reasonable assumption and not a documented one.
So the 27 September advice stands, slightly narrowed: you no longer need to ask who can see a shared dashboard — that’s answered. You do still need to ask, in writing, whose credentials run the query when someone else opens a dashboard built on your warehouse. That’s a smaller question than the one we posed three weeks ago, which is progress.
Why this matters more than it sounds
The reason we keep returning to this is that the data layer is where vibe-coded things actually go wrong. In September we covered 16,326 apps leaking their users’ data through one setting nobody had looked at. This week, a third builder absorbed the backend entirely.
Every one of these tools makes it easier to get data flowing and harder to see where it goes. Claude Dashboards sit squarely in that pattern. Claude Dashboards are a genuinely good version of this — each chart shows the query behind it and when it last refreshed, which means a non-technical person can check what a number is actually counting rather than trusting it. That one design decision does more for safety than any amount of documentation.
How to use it without regretting it
- Start with a connector you’ve already authorised, not a new warehouse connection. Salesforce or similar, where the permissions question is already settled.
- Build one dashboard and click into a chart’s query. Read what it’s counting. This is the feature’s best idea and almost nobody will use it.
- Check the number against something you know. Claude Dashboards are only as good as the query underneath them. Same advice we gave for Replit: if it gets a known answer right, that’s evidence.
- Before you share, decide who needs it — and remember they’ll need a Claude account, and they’ll see it through their own access, not yours.
- If you’re connecting a live warehouse, ask the credentials question first. Get the answer in writing. “We don’t know” is a bad reason to connect a production database.
Who should care (and who shouldn’t)
- Running a business with data in Salesforce or a warehouse: this is the most capable version of ask-your-data-a-question yet, and it’s on Pro. Steps 1–3 are worth an hour.
- On a Team or Enterprise plan: check with whoever owns your organisation settings — on Enterprise this is off until someone turns it on.
- Using Replit’s version already: nothing to switch, and no need to move to Claude Dashboards. The comparison worth making is whether yours shows you the query.
- On the Free plan: no Claude Dashboards, but Docs, Slides and Design became free to you today.
- Not storing much data anywhere: this isn’t for you yet, and that’s fine.
Our take
We’d use it, with a connector, today — and that’s a change from what we said about Replit’s version in September.
The difference is documentation. Three weeks ago the honest position was that nobody had published how access worked, so we said don’t connect a live customer database. Anthropic has published enough that the position softens: private by default, no anonymous links, account required, and shared dashboards running on the viewer’s own connections rather than yours. That’s a sensible set of defaults and it was written down before anyone had to ask.
The query visibility in Claude Dashboards is the part we’d want copied everywhere. Showing the SQL behind every number, and when it last ran, turns a dashboard from something you trust into something you can check. For an audience that can’t audit what a tool does, being able to see what a number counts is the difference between information and decoration.
What we’d still not do is point it at a production warehouse until the credentials question has a documented answer. Not because we expect a problem — the general artifact rule is sensible and probably applies — but because “probably applies” isn’t a basis for connecting the database your business runs on.
And the thing worth noticing is the pattern. Replit in September, Figma this week, Anthropic in between: every builder is racing to sit between you and your data. The ones that will deserve the position are the ones that show their working.

FAQ
Who can see a Claude dashboard once I share it?
Only people you choose. Dashboards start private to you. On Pro and Max you can share with specific people by email or with anyone holding the link; on Team and Enterprise you can share with invited people, your whole organisation, or by link if an owner has enabled external sharing. Everyone who opens it needs a Claude account — there is no anonymous viewing.
Does sharing a dashboard give other people access to my data?
Not according to Anthropic’s artifact documentation, which says a shared artifact uses the viewer’s connections rather than the owner’s, and shows an error where a viewer lacks access. Note that this is documented for artifacts generally; Anthropic’s Dashboards-specific pages don’t restate it for warehouse-backed dashboards, so confirm it before connecting a production warehouse.
Which plans have Claude Dashboards?
Dashboards are in beta on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. They count towards your normal plan usage limits. On Enterprise they are off by default and must be enabled by an owner under Organization settings, where they can also be limited to specific groups using custom roles.
